Redefining Competence in the Age of AI:From Digital Competence to AI Competence

    DOI http://dx.doi.org/10.62783/SHSS.8.2.35

    Jiwon Yoon* & Jungkyu Park**

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of AI competence as a concept for explaining the integrated performance abilities required in education in the age of AI by comparing and analyzing discussions on digital competence and AI literacy, and to redefine its concept and components. This study employed a literature-based comparative conceptual analysis. To this end, key Korean and international studies on digital competence and AI literacy were selected and analyzed according to four criteria: conceptual focus, key components, perspectives on human–technology relations, and educational orientation. The findings showed that digital competence and AI literacy share a common foundation, while differing in terms of technological specificity and educational orientation. The sub-elements of AI literacy were found to extend beyond understanding and interpretation to include application, analysis, critical judgment, ethical responsibility, and collaborative problem solving. Based on these findings, this study defines AI competence as an integrated performance ability to understand and use AI technologies and environments, exercise critical judgment, consider ethical responsibility, and solve problems and act through human–AI interaction. The abilities required in education in the age of AI may be more appropriately explained through the concept of AI competence than through AI literacy. Future research should refine detailed indicators for different target groups based on the components of AI competence and extend the discussion to the development of assessment tools and curriculum design.

Key Words: Age of AI, Digital Competence, AI Literacy, AI Competence, Conceptual Redefinition
