한국 사회에 문화 자본은 존재하는가?

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 한국 사회의 역사적이고 사회적인 특수성을 근거로 문화 자본의 존재를 부정하는 논의에 대해, 한국 사회의 보다 심층적인 구조와 재생산 메커니즘을 찾아내기 위해서는 한국 사회의 문화 자본에 대한 심층적인 연구가 필수적이라는 반론을 제기하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 우선 미국 문화사회학에서의 부르디외 문화 자본론 관련 연구들을 한국사회 연구에 있어서의 함의점이라는 측면에서 문화 자본론의 적용성, 문화자본과 계급의 상응성, 그리고 문화 자본의 생성과 제도화라는 세 주제를 중심으로 정리한다. 이 세 가지 주제는 부르디외의 문화 자본론을 바탕으로 하면서도 이를 비판적으로 확장 발전시켜 문화사회학의 주요 분야로 자리잡은 대표적인 예들이다. 다음으로 그간 한국 사회에서 진행되어온 문화자본에 대한 연구들을 이 세 주제의 맥락에서 개괄하고 보다 활발하고 풍부한 문화 자본 논의와 경험적 연구를 위해 다음과 같은 세 가지 방안을 제안한다. 첫 번째, 문화 자본을 좀 더 광범위하고 적응성 있는 개념으로 재개념화하고 좀 더 폭넓은 시각에서 문화 자본론을 해석함으로써 한국사회에서 작용하고 있는 문화 자본의 형태와 그 작동 방식을 밝혀내는 연구들이 필요하다. 둘째, 문화 자본의 실증적 연구를 보다 활성화하기 위해서는 문화 활동 및 취향 전반에 관한 광범위한 실태 파악과 지속적인 조사 자료의 집적이 중요하다. 셋째, 서구의 고급문화, 대중문화, 그리고 생활양식들이 어떻게 한국 사회에 스며들어 제도화되어왔는가에 대한 사회사적인 시각을 가진 연구가 체계적으로 수행되어야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Some sociologists argue cultural capital does not exist in Korea because of historical and social uniqueness of the society. I raise a counterargument by contending that in-depth study on cultural capital in Korea is essential in order to understand the underlying structure and the reproduction mechanism of Korean society. In an attempt to find implications on Korean society, I address American studies based on Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital around three subjects: applicability of his theory; correspondency between class and cultural capital; and generation and institutionalization of cultural capital. Around these three subjects, Bourdieu’s theory has critically expanded and become a major part of sociology of culture in America. Then, I summarize Korean studies on cultural capital in the light of the three subjects and demonstrate the importance and the pertinence of researches on cultural capital in Korea. For more active discussions on cultural capital and more appropriate empirical studies, I make three suggestions. Firstly, we need to investigate the forms of cultural capital and their operating mechanism in Korea. In order to do that, we should reconceptualize the concept of cultural capital to make it more extensive and more adaptive. Also, we should interpret the theory of cultural capital in broader context. Secondly, for active empirical studies on cultural capital, we should collect and accumulate data on cultural activities and cultural tastes. Thirdly, with socio-historical perspective, we should perform systematic studies to reveal how western high culture, popular culture, and life style have permeated throughout Korean society and become institutionalized.
