This paper is a research on the direction of William Perkins` reformation. Specially I dealt with a Perkins` different reformation way against a backdrop of his historical position. Perkins had intent to emphasize the inner and practical reformation of England Church. So he strongly urged the renovation of heart rather than political change.
Perkins is the leader of the second-generation puritans and evaluated as the most important theologian in the Church of England in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Contrary to the first-generation Puritans, he did not cling to the issues about changing of religious system and worship rituals. Thus he refused to separate from the Church of England in the name of the thorough reformation. Instead, he pursued personal renovation of heart within the Church of England. He intensively suggested the renovation of heart rather than the change of religious system. He thought that the renovation of heart should be a new direction of the Church of England. This is the reason that people in that days didn`t try to read his heart sincerely. So church was full of superficial “Pharisees.”
In the situation, Perkins intended to renew the English Church through the renovation of heart. Especially he put emphasis on prayer as the way of church reformation, because prayer is the inner conversation with God, and people in his days prayed not sincerely but ceremonially. Of course, other reformers, such as Martin Luther, Johann Calvin, John Bradford, Philip Melanchthon, underlined prayer. They considered prayer significantly in shaping their theology and proceeding reformation movements.
Perkins has the fame, “The father of Puritans.” He is the reformer of heart who pursued more practical and internal piety. But it is true that he has not received attention in spite of his reputation in my country. Most of researches about him centered on The art of Prophesying. However, he wrote many articles and made sermons about various themes. They are helpful to enhance saints` piety and church reformation. His many books can be valuable assets for church reformation in our age.
