We really felt that we belonged to one territory and one people as late as half a century ago. However, we actually Perceive today, as is generally hewn, the heterogeneous phenomenon caused from the division of the country into south and north. In particular, even the new year customs make a vasts difference, which brings about heterogeneity in the language. This is because south Korea has been imbued with Western culture, while north Korea with the Kims idolization and subjectivity ideology in every walk of life. At this time when a way to unification is accelerated after the South-North summit talks in last June, it seems to be an urgent mission that we should restore homogeneity in our customs.
South Korea emphasizes that the new year customs are an important part of our traditional culture, having attended to investigations and researches. Although the new year customs based on time have considerably disappeared, their mainstream is being transmitted incessantly. Besides, that trend may be said to be a fortunate one which our traditional culture is restored by puffing much value on ours.
On the other hand, north Korea has rejected the new year customs for some time for the reason that they were against the way of life in society but restored national holidays, including chusuk, the lunar new year, and dano, after the initiation of a South-North dialogue in 1972.
Furthermore, it seems that it will be keenly interested in the new year customs since the South-North summit talks.
At least in order fur us to be prepared for our unification, we need to incessantly collect and arrange a wide range of data of the new year customs so that we could enjoy them together with the people in the North. It is recommended to conduct simultaneous researches on the new year customs amide from horizontal ones, along with collecting information on the new year customs as touch as possible to carry out South-North integrated researches. One of the alternatives may be that exchange of data collected and study results between the South and the North should be preceded prior to political unification, along with exchange of scholars.
