Virtual influencers are a double-edged communication resource for corporations, offering innovation and visibility while also generating ethical controversy and trust-related risks. This study examines how identity disclosure strategies shape audience interpretation and corporate reputation in the context of virtual influencers. To do so, it compares the cases of Rozy and Lil Miquela and analyzes their differing disclosure strategies through the lenses of Signaling Theory and the concept of the ontological contract. The findings suggest that authenticity judgments in virtual interactions depend less on factual resemblance itself than on the perceived “Honest Fictionality” of the virtual entity. Proactive disclosure appears to reduce defensive expectations and shift audience attention toward technological and aesthetic appreciation, whereas identity ambiguity tends to trigger verification efforts and heighten the risk of weakened trust and reputational loss. These results indicate that transparency may function as a key moderating factor in virtual influencer reputation formation. From a practical perspective, the study suggests that clear disclosure of virtual identity at an early stage can help mitigate concerns about deception.
