Animated films produced by The Walt Disney Company are widely embraced by diverse audiences and are frequently regarded as exemplary cases of moral communication and youth education. Within the narrative structures of Disney animated films, one often encounters negative characters whose dispositions stand in stark contrast to the positive values the films promote—such as love, peace, justice, and kindness. Žižek argues that cynicism constitutes one of the dominant ideologies of contemporary society, one that demands lucid recognition and explicit critique. For Žižek, the cynical subject is characterized by a self-assured belief in their own “clear-sightedness,” a refusal to embrace the possibility of genuine transformation, and a paradoxical enjoyment of the benefits afforded by ideology. Cynicism, therefore, is not a praiseworthy stance. Rather, Žižek maintains that the subject must traverse the ideological fantasy that sustains such a position. Yet within Disney films—texts that ostensibly disseminate affirmative moral values—cynical characters appear with notable frequency. These figures seem to contradict the overarching ethical atmosphere of the narrative world; nevertheless, they perform crucial narrative functions. This study adopts a methodology combining literature review and case analysis. It aims to interpret cynical characters in Disney’s anthropomorphic animal films through the lens of Slavoj Žižek’s critique of cynicism. Specifically, the study analyzes the functions of such characters within these films. Furthermore, it argues that cynical characters serve as pivotal anchors within the ideological space of Disney’s anthropomorphic animal films, and act as agents that propel characters to traverse ideological fantasy.
