Sil Kyoung landscape painting(the real-scenery landscape painting, 實景山水畵) in the 19th century Joseon dynasty largely refers to Kihaeng Sakyoung-do(the travel landscape painting, 紀行寫景圖) painted by literati on a travel or an excursion; it was represented in the form of a travel landscape painting album(紀行書畵帖), a widthwise scroll painting(橫卷) and a fold screen(屛風). Kihaeng Sakyoung-do could be defined as a painting expressing inspiration and knowledge from travels of scenic spots, which was the most popular sort of painting among Chin-Kyoung landscape paintings(the true-view landscape painting, 眞景山水畵) in that the literati had painted Kihaeng Sakyoung-do together with excursion records(紀行遊記) and excursion poetry to keep the inspiration of travel for a long time. Kihaeng Sakyoung-do is noted in that the realistic trait and the presence were resulted from the description of real scenery, and the characteristic of record was also found in the excursion literature(紀行文學). While defining the term of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do as the painting of an actual landscape surveyed during a travel, the present thesis was considered by analyzing the background of paintings and the painting style varied pursuant to each period with focus onto the Kihaeng Sakyoung-do reflecting an excursion trend of literati in the 19th century.
The characteristics of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the 19th century can be summarized as two changes - the order for the painting and the expression in the painting. The first change indicates that the literati gave professional painters an order for Kihaeng Sakyoung-do after their excursion or travel, the second change shows an method of expression emphasizing the realistic trait and presence after Kim Hong-Do's realistic style of painting. While the present thesis was deviated from a view point which consider the 19th century as the retrogressive period of Chin-Kyoung landscape paintings, it was considered Kihaeng Sakyoung-do as the painting in the transition period when Chin-Kyoung landscape paintings in the 18th century developed into modern Sil-Kyoung landscape painting in the 20th century. Considering Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the 19th century as modern Sil-Kyoung landscape painting based on visual verisimilitude, the thesis was thus attempted to expound its connection with the modern Korean art.
The foundations from which Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the 19th century was derived could be examined as followed: first, the excursion literature spreaded into the lower class so as to enjoy it, which led to the multiplication of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do; second, the works of professional painters given orders from literati, which caused the manifold and individual styles of painting with professional painters' ability of depiction even though they painted the same subject matter; finally, the prevalence of copies imitating Kim Hong-Do's painting, which had begun to be produced by distributing Kim Hong-Do's painting album, Hae San Chup(the painting album describing landscape of Mt. Geumgang and Youngdong area, ≪海山帖≫) in 1788 as ordered from the king, Chung-Jo. This prevalence in the first half of the 19th century would be due to the professional painters' recognition of Kim Hong-Do's realistic style emphasizing linear description rather than usage of black ink as an effective expression for realistic landscape painting.
Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the first half of the 19th century could be divided into two classes, one painted by literati and the other painted by professional painters with literati's support. With the popularity of paintings of realistic style led by Kim Hong-Do, the style of painting was also divided into two classes: the new individual style of painting different from Kim Hong-Do's and the copies imitating Kim Hong-do's painting. The former was found in paintings of literati such as Jung Soo-Young(鄭遂榮), Yoon Je-Hong(尹濟弘) and Lee Bang-Woon(李昉運), and in Kihaeng Sakyoung-do of Kim Ha-Jong (金夏鍾), these painters of Court reflected the individual painting style, and they reflected their painting of realistic without imitating Kim Hong-Do's painting, alternatively, the Kihaeng Sakyoung-do reflected Kim Hong-Do's style therein has the almost same composition and a little variation due to the imitation of different paintings. The copies of Kim Hong-Do's style are important in that these paintings make it possible to infer the title of paintings omitted in Hae San Chup and to identify the trace of excursions from Book Kwan Jung(<北寬亭>) to Sileuk Sa( <神勒寺> ).
In the latter half of the 19th century, Kihaeng Sakyoung-do represented the influence of Southern School literati painting led by Kim Jung-Hee or evinced traits of the folk painting. Kim Ha-Jong, who had presented individual painting style till then, painted in compromising way reflecting taste of orderers and aesthetics in that period. The paintings of Cho Jung-Gyu(趙廷奎), particularly, had influence on works of his grandson Cho Suk-Jin(趙錫晋), and works of his grandnephew Byun Kwan-Sik (卞寬植) who belongs to modern Korean artists. The copies of Cho Jung-Gyu was produced on a large scale among the professional painters who made fold screens painted Kihaeng Sakyoung-do from the last of the 19th century to the early 20th century. Besides the combination of copies imitating outstanding scenes from Kihaeng Sakyoung-do was painted by Cho Jung-Gyu, Kim Hong-Do and Chung Sun respectively, the form of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do composed with set-pattern landscape painting also appeared. Meanwhile, Kihaeng Sakyoung-do painted in the style of folk painting produced on a large scale, which originated with traditional Kihaeng Sakyoung-do but transformed so as to suit the taste of lower class. In the modern era, the term of Sil-Kyoung landscape painting including Kihaeng Sakyoung-do transformed into that of Sa-Kyoung landscape painting(寫景山水畵); the first generation of modern traditional artists, i.e. the painters who learned traditional way from Art Joong-Sik (安中植) and Cho Suk-Jin, such as Lee Sang-Bum (李象範), Byun Kwan-Sik, and Kim Eun-Ho(金殷鎬) succeeded the tradition of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the 19th century.
Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the first half of the 19th century showed the individual style by literati and Kim Ha-Jong and the emphasis of Kim Hong-Do's painting style through the imitation of his painting album. The compromising form of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do embracing the influence of Southern School literati painting and the other form of Kihaeng Sakyoung-do painted in style of the folk painting was produced in a large way from the last of the 19th century to the early 20th century. This study would be important in respect that Kihaeng Sakyoung-do in the 19th century had significant influence on modern Korean art in terms of modern Sil-Kyoung landscape painting based on verisimilitude, and that the 19th century could be regarded as a transition period when Chin-Kyoung landscape paintings in the 18th century developed into modern Sil-Kyoung landscape painting in the 20th century.
