In piano teaching, teachersoffer self-centered lessons to their students with negative perspective unless they build up a good relationship. If making a relationship between teachers and students is failed during piano teaching, the negative perspective will be getting stronger leading to a teacher-centered lesson. In addition, if teachers teach their students through rigid rules without any concern of their differences in personalities or musical abilitiesof individuals, it can make them lose their interest easily.
A psychologist, Jung said the goal of education is not to help the child to develop in the normal ways, but to encourage him/her to discover potential by him/herself. To do this, teachers have to find out the students’ temperament types. The goal of this study is to recognize the need for different piano pedagogies for the different personalities and to find out the most effective piano teaching methods for each student by analyzing the relationship between learning styles and different personalities.
In this study, a survey of 210 students 9 to 13 years of agewho have private lessons in the metropolitan area was conducted. I looked over individual students personalities through the MMTIC and analyzed their learning styles by using a questionnairewhich was tested by SPSS WIN statistics program.
The sixteen personality types can be divided into four temperaments which are Extraversion and Introversion, Sensing and Intuition, Thinking and Feeling and also Judging and Perceiving.
As a result of this study, SP children tend to act impulsively and have a strong desire to show off. They usually do not like a typical lesson method because they prefer to learn via experiencing. Therefore, it is more effective to make them feel free and fun rather than offering a typical and rigid lesson.
The SP children are more talented in art than other temperaments, so they are suited for learning to play the piano if teachers motivate them. Also, teachers should not cram lessons but provide mutual lessons because they like to find out the way of learning by themselves. In addition, teachers should encourage children and offer compliments during the lessons.
The common aspect of SJ children is the need for safety. So, they prefer well-prepared lessons. Opposite to SP children, SJ children feel comfortable when they are ordered in details by their teacher rather than having free space. This type of children is easy to learn because they obey the rule. They are sensitiveto evaluation and try to get positive feedback from their teachers. Most of them work very hard and do their homework with a strong sense of responsibility. They also prefer to follow the way given by teachers when they practice the piano. These children sometimes do not ask "why" because they think it is rude to their teacher. So, teachers should observe their students’ thought very carefully.
Curiosity is the common aspect of NT children. So, it is effective way to stimulate their curiosity and provide a simple and accurate lesson without many repetitions. In addition, they like to get informationuntil they are satisfied, because they obtain some energy from curiosity against the unknown world. Also, they need time to think and find out the way of learning by themselves. Therefore, teachers should wait their students with patient and listen carefully what they want.
NF children essentially need care, concern and mutual relationship.
The most important factor for those students is to build up relationships and to provide trust through lessons because they get influenced easily by relationships with other people. In addition, it is more effective way to give grants and compliments to individual students. Teachers should give not only critiques but also some praise too because NF children can be damaged very easily by little critiques. The children can have more curiosity when they prepare lessons, so it is helpful to encourage them to do their homework. For NF children, teachers can offer effective lessons with understanding the importance of maintaining close relationship.
As I discussed above, the differences of the type of temperaments can influence their styles of learning. Therefore, teachers should not stick to their teaching methods, but be flexible by understanding different personalities and learning styles of each student in order to provide effective lessons to them.
