다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

The purpose of this paper is to inquire into the distinction between arguments and adjuncts which has been one of the basic assumptions in argument structure theories. Some studies (Kiparsky 1987, Bresnan and Kanerva 1989) have proposed that English idiomatic expressions provide supporting evidence for hierarchical order among fine-grained thematic roles, which in tum determines the hierarchy among arguments. In this paper, I analyze about 2,800 English idiomatic expressions in terms of the thematic roles of the incorporated expressions to test whether the proposal is valid The result shows that one third of the examples incorporates adjuncts and that the argument structure of each verb does not predict what it will incorporate in idioms, which leads us to conclude that English idiomatic expressions do not support the hierarchical order among arguments or the distinction between arguments and adjuncts. I propose that the distribution of English idiomatic expressions rather represents the basic event structure of a predicate which involves a thing, its state or change of state, and the manner of the change.
