시각문화 미술교육에 대한 오해와 미술 교육적 의미 = Reconsidering meanings of visual culture studies in art education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

  본고는 미국 미술교육에서 보이는 시각문화 미술교육에 대한 관심과 도입과정에서의 몇가지 오해와 문제점을 살펴보고 우리 미술교육에 주는 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 첫째, 시각문화 미술교육이란 미술교육의 양적 확대라는 내용의 측면뿐 아니라 접근방식의 변화를 의미한다. 둘째로 시각문화 미술교육은 작품 활동을 배제하고 이미지 읽기에만 치중하는 것이 아니라 학생의 문화를 심층적으로 이해하고 작품 활동으로 이어지게 함으로써 미술교육의 핵심적인 부분을 계속적으로 심화 확대해가는 것이다. 마지막으로 시각문화 미술교육은 대중문화만을 다루는 것이 아니라 미술작품과 그가 위치해있는 문화적 컨텍스트를 살펴보고 학생들의 삶의 핵심적 문제를 살펴본다. 자라나는 학생들의 문화를 통해 정체성 문제를 다룸으로써 흥미꺼리나 일시적 관심사가 아닌 문화적 인식을 통한 자신의 탐구를 가능하게 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

  This article examines some misunderstanding of visul culture studies in the field of art education in U.S. The author proposes the ways to understand meanings of visual culture studies and pedagogical approaches to art education. First of all. visual culture art education is not just about contents but approaches. Second, visual culture art education does not exclude students" artistic production from the field of art education but reconsiders students" artistic production. Students artistic production should be considered as the ways of understanding their cultures. The authors argues for the continuation of students" art making as well as socio-cultural analysis of images. Finally, visual culture art education includes artworks as well as images of popular culture. Art educators should encourage students to examine cultural context surrounding artworks and artifacts. In doing so, students could connect essential problems of their lifes to big ideas of artifacts. Students could explore their identity through the understanding of cultural meanings in their everyday visual experiences.
