The problems of child support awards in divorce cases were analyzed in this study. This study investigated child support guideline of America, and analyzed income adequacy of Korean cases according to the income-to-needs ratios. Also rational child support guideline was proposed. The results of overall case analysis were as follows : 1) child support awards were too little to maintain children`s well-being, 2) there is no case whose award was determined the ratio of or share of non-custodial parent`s income, 3) a few cases showed different award even in the same cases, 4) there is no statement about the way to transfer child support. The results of income-to-needs ratio analysis indicated that even after transfer of child support, custodial parent`s income adequacy was lower, on the other hand non-custodial parent`s income adequacy was higher after divorce. So rational child support guideline, spreadsheet determining income-to-needs ratios for two households, could be proposed in order to distribute income evenly.
