The Jeongja housing development complex located in the northem Suwon city consists of around 30,000 households in a huge scale apartment complex including 18,000 households near the Chechen Area. Since the apartment complex had been constructed near the existing chemical plants including medical and drug manufacturing factories, many public nuisances /grievances caused by malodorous smell were appealed by residents. Thus, the objective of the study is to investigate characteristics of major odor causing species and their impact assessments in Suwon City. The impact assessment by each odor source in the facilities was effectively carried out using the ISCS3 (Industrial Source Complex Short Term 3) model, one of the US EPA's regulatory model. The model has ability to consider the wind direction changes for corresponding downwind heights and to assess the average concentration from one hour to one year. According to the results from ISCST3 modeling for odor impact assessment of Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer(RTO), all the maximum odor concentrations did not exceed the ambient odor standard. A result showed that the maximum concentration of the acetic aldehyde was 2.8 ppb, it was far below the emission standard of 50 ppb; however, the level exceeded the threshold odor concentration of 1.5 ppb. Thus, the acetic aldehyde was one of serious malodor matters causing public nuisances in this study area.
