The purpose of this study was to examine the mediation effect on aggression in the relation between youths' smartphone addiction and cyber violence for youths. A total of 375 students who composed of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students in Junior high schools located in Seoul were selected for the convenience sampling. They participated in the survey at their own classrooms as they agreed to answer a questionnaire. Based on collected data, the descriptive statistics, reliability prediction, and intervariable correlation analysis were statistically analyzed by IBM SPSS 19.0. The effects of smartphone addiction, aggression, and cyber violence on the main variables of gender and grade were verified with t-test and ANOVA. The correlation of main variables influneced in smartphone addiction, aggression, cyber violence witnessing, inflicting injury, and resulting harm were also conducted. The procedure was suggested by Baron and Kenny(1986) to verify the mediation effect on aggression in relation between smartphone addiction and cyber violence. Morover, the procedure suggested by Sobel test to verify the significance of the mediation effect on aggression..The findings were as follows: First, in the analysis of smartphone use, 89% of 375 students were using smartphones, and the most frequently use function was SNA such as Kakao Talk, Line, etc., which accounted for 50.3%. Second, the extent of smartphone addiction, aggression, and cyber violence depended on the gender. The rate of witnessing smartphone addiction and cyber violence was higher among female students than male students, and the level of aggression was more significant among male students than female students. No significant difference in other variables between male and female students was found. Third, among youths, smartphone addiction, aggression, and cyber violence were significantly correlated. Specifically, as the level of smartphone addiction was high, that of aggression was high accordingly. A significant relation was observed between aggression and cyber violence and between smartphone addiction and cyber violence. Fourth, the mediation effect on aggression was verified between smartphone addiction and cyber violence in all cyber violence offense, victim, and witnessing. According to the findings, smartphone addiction and cyber violence among youths were correlated, and aggression was a mediating variable. In conclusions, this study verified the correlation between smartphone addiction and cyber violence among youths as well as the variables and parameters of cyber violence. It is expected that the findings of this study will be utilized as the basis for directions of appropriate use of smartphones and prevention of cyber violence.
