This study explored how Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) facilitating an English picture book can affect undergraduates’ emotional touch, social growth and literacy education. With an English picture book, Mama, the participants experienced a multiple thinking-aloud method and inquiry-based discussions with peers and connected the hidden meaning with the values of the real world. The participants accumulated their language knowledge by producing writing essays. Regardless of negative and positive emotions, they expressed theirs in verbal and written language.
In particular, recalling their memories and rebuilding social relationships between family members through narrative writing helped them interpret their emotions and focus on their unwanted behaviors. While making the problem-solving effort, they could create an objective distance between themselves and others, which contributed to humanities therapy.
