This thesis examines whether Netflix’s production involvement in South Korea has reduced the content diversity of Korean television dramas, with a focus on webtoon-based adaptations. As Netflix has expanded investment in Korean original series, concerns have arisen that platform-driven production strategies may encourage convergence toward highly marketable formats. This study investigates how Netflix’s entry has reshaped production patterns and content characteristics within the Korean drama industry.
Using a quantitative research design, the study analyzes Korean dramas released between 2010 and 2024 and compares Netflix-originated dramas with domestically produced broadcast dramas. The analysis addresses three questions: changes in the share of webtoon-based dramas after Netflix’s production involvement, changes in the content diversity of broadcast dramas, and differences in expressive characteristics between production platforms. Large-scale industry data are combined with survey-based evaluative coding to examine violence, sexual explicitness, and narrative complexity.
The findings show that webtoon-based dramas increased substantially after Netflix began producing Korean originals, and that Netflix-originated dramas rely on webtoon intellectual property at higher rates than broadcast dramas. Contrary to concerns about homogenization, domestically produced broadcast dramas exhibited increased thematic breadth and genre hybridity after Netflix’s entry. In contrast, Netflix-originated dramas displayed significantly higher levels of violence, sexual explicitness, and narrative complexity. Overall, the results suggest that Netflix’s production involvement has differentiated content strategies across platforms rather than uniformly narrowing content diversity within the Korean drama industry.
