파베세의 I paesi tuoi 배경과 공간의 이미지 연구 = Study on Images of the Space and the Background in Pavese’s novel I paesi tuoi

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Cesare Pavese was born in Santo Stefano Belbo, in the province of Cuneo. It was the village where his father was born and where the family returned for the summer holidays each year. The Langhe, the area where he spent his summer holidays as a boy, had a great hold on Pavese. It is a land of rolling hills covered in vineyards. It is an area where he felt literally at home, but he recognised the harsh and brutal lives that poor peasants had making a living from the land. Pavese’s vital interests belonged to the urban middle and working classes, and this bears crucially on the choice of language throughout his work. Turin is as he was: industrious, clenched in a feverish and stiff-necked preoccupation, and, at the same time, indolent and given to wandering and daydreaming. The typical protagonist in the works of Pavese is a loner, through choice or through circumstances. His relationships with men and women tend to be temporary and superficial. He may wish to have more solidarity with other people, but he often ends up betraying his ideals and friends. In this novel (I paesi tuoi) are rappresented well these images of Turin, Langhe and those habitants.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

태생적으로 내성적이고 소심한 파베세(Pavese)의 성격은 문학 속에도 그대로 반영되어 고독하고 쓸쓸하며 실존적 고뇌를 즐기는 인간형을 등장시켜 작품속의 작가의 실존을 느끼게 하여준다. 그의 문학적 지형이 잘 표출된 작품이 1941년 발표한 그의 첫 장편 『당신들의 고향 I paesi tuoi』이다. 이 작품은 그의 불안정한 내면세계와 관조적인 인생의 행로를 비교적 객관적으로 보여준다. 그리고 도시와 농촌의 상반적인 이미지를 대비하면서 자아를 잃고 내적불안으로 방황하는 당대인들의 내적, 외적 모습을 은유적으로 보여준다. 도시에서의 삶도 농촌에서의 삶도 당대인들의 소외와 고독 그리고 내적 불안을 치유해 주지 못하고 있다. 이성보다는 감성, 이성적 에세이 보다는 로맨스, 냉정한 판단보다는 충동적 광기 그리고 희극 보다는 비극을 본격적으로 보여주는 이 내러티브는 계절적 배경인 여름과 어우러지며 작품의 의미를 한층 부각시킨다. 이 작품은 도시에서 농촌이라는 공간이동과 이미지 이동 그리고 공간과 이미지의 변화에 따른 등장인물들의 특징들이 명료하게 제시되어 있는 매우 특이한 작품이다. 작가는 이 작품에서 주체와 타자의 문제, 농촌과 도시의 이미지, 도시인과 농촌사람에 대한 고정된 이미지 등, 후기 산업사회에서 인간이 갖게 되는 내적 불안을 작가의 슬픈 목소리로 표현해 내고 있다. 작품의 비극적 결말은 10년 후 그의 비극적 죽음을 암시하기도 한다. 이 작품을 비롯 파베세의 거의 모든 작품 속 이야기의 배경은 뜨거운 여름이다. 공간도 역시 농촌이 대부분이다. 무더운 여름과 농촌이라는 배경은 그의 작품의 테마와 비극적 결말을 은연중에 예고하는 코드이기도 하다.
