· Human being as an organism has an instinct to respond to stimuli. The responding behaviour is called 'culture only when it is learned and formed as the common way of living in a society. The way of behavior is not only the means of living but also the expression of thought. Thus, the relation between environment and behaviour can not but be arbitrary and various depending on the social experience. By studying the behaviours responding to a certain environment, cultural variation can be explained. Cultural variation, being behavioral differences, must be studied in terms of environment stimulating human beings and human being responding to stimuli. The environment can be divided into nature and society. Even in the same geographical environment, cultural variation can be formed by cultural transmission and innovation. However, individual personality plays an important role in responding to stimuli. As personality can be also learned, the commonality of cultural variation must be 'instintutional thought pattern.' The thought pattern is determined by actor's needs, values, beliefs, and attitudes. Environment surrounding actors determines needs and values. And actor's experience determines beliefs and attitudes. Therefore, cultural variation can be explained by understanding behavioural arbitrariness, environmental differences, and actor's personality.
