Objective: Needlestick and sharps injuries (NSSIs) among dental hygienists and their influencing factors were investigated, focusing on preventive behavior awareness and practices. Methods: An online survey was administered to 245 dental hygienists between August 1 and September 2, 2023. The obtained data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20. Independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance were used to assess the occurrence frequency and causes of NSSIs. Linear regression was performed to identify the factors influencing NSSI occurrence. Results: A total of 77.6% of the participants reported experiencing NSSIs, with an average frequency of 4.97 incidents per person. The NSSI frequency was higher among those with less work experience. The main factors contributing to NSSI occurred were decreased concentration (stress, carelessness, and time constraints; β=0.146, p=0.054) and lack of professional skills and experience (β=0.210, p=0.008). Implementing preventive measures, particularly to the dental office environment (β=0.251, p=0.038), significantly decreased NSSI incidence. Followup actions, such as visiting the infection control office and work experience, also influenced NSSI occurrence. Conclusions: NSSIs re prevalent among dental hygienists, particularly those with less work experience. Strategies must be developed to increase concentration, provide professional skill training, and strengthen preventive behaviors, such as improving the clinical environment. Continuous infection control education and systematic workplace management are recommended to minimize the risk of occupational exposure to NSSIs.
