Cheon Yu(天游) Kwon Bok-in (1770∼1830) was a literary person who represented the cultural characteristics of the nobility in the 19th-century. Previous research on Kwon Bok-in was focused on the travel essay 『Su Sa Han Pil(隨槎閑筆)』 about Yeonhaeng(Journey to Beijing). But not enough studies has been made to writer’s life and literature. Kwon Bok-in is a writer who must be noted in the history of Korean literature in the 19th century. Because he was a person who interacted with major writers in Seoul in the 18th and 19th centuries and consumed urban culture and achieved literary achivements by reflecting it. So this paper organize Kwon Bok-in’s life and companionship, reflecting a perspective that it is necessary to study preferentially author than his literatures, as the first study about Kwon Bok-in. Also, this paper exmines the background of Kwon Bok-in’s literary activity. Therefore, it could be a significant trial for it could contribute to view not only the personal literary world of Kwon Bok-in but also minor literary clubs and various poetry clubs in Seoul, in first half of 19th century.
The lifelong aim of Kwon Bok-in was poetry club activities, reading good books, and journeys, with various literatus in Seoul. It is notable for activities and relationship with the nobility of Namgo Poetry club(楠皐詩社), Shim Neung-sook’s poetry club in southern Seoul. The poem that described activities of a married couple, Kang Jeong-il-dangㆍYun Kwang-yeon(姜靜一 堂ㆍ尹光演) who are relatives by marriage of Kwon Bok-in in Tanwon Poetry club(坦園詩會) is a very significant literary work. As it has been represented lifestyle and cognition of the fallen-nobility in those days. And sharedcultural taste with the nobility and the Middle-class Literatus could be discovered in Bak’ongsil Poetry club(泊翁室詩會) held at the mansion of Lee Myung-o(李明五), a representative Middle-class literati in 19th centry. It also could be discovered in activities of Chun Soo-kyung(千壽慶) in Songseokwon Poetry club(松石園詩社).
