스펙터클이 된 자연과 지방: 현대 중국 실경공연(實景公演)의 문화적 의미

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 최근 중국의 여러 지역에서 관광상품으로 인기를 얻고 있는 ‘실경공연’이 현대 중국사회에서 어떤 문화적 의미를 갖는지 중국의 사회적 맥락 속에서 이해·분석하고 이를 통해 중국의 자연과 지방, 관광 등이 어떤 방식과 내용으로 개념화되는지 밝히고자 하였다. 연구를 위해 연구자는 2013년 10월 중국의 쿤밍(昆明)과 리장(丽江), 항저우(杭州)를, 2014년 1월에는 상하이와 베이징에서 참여관찰에 기반한 현장연구를 수행하였다. 세 지역에서 관광객 및 지역 전문가와 면담을 하고 연구주제와 관련된 각 지역의 공연에 대한 참여관찰을 수행하였다.
실경공연은 말 그대로 실제의 자연경관을 무대로 삼고 현란한 조명과 다양한 테크놀로지를 동원하며 수백 명의 대규모 출연진이 참여하는 종합예술공연을 의미한다. 최근에는 자연을 배경으로 하는 공연 뿐 아니라 실내의 다양한 공연들도 볼거리 위주로 기획되고 각 지역에서 유명한 관광상품이 되고 있다.
중화인민공화국의 성립 이후 지금까지 중국 현대사는 어떤 의미에서는 스펙터클의 연속이었다. 스펙터클은 정치적 힘을 과시하고 정치적 이념을 주입하는 역할을 하였다. 문화혁명이 끝난 후 중국은 개혁개방을 통해 변화를 모색하게 되었고 2000년대 초반에 장이머우 감독의 <영웅> 같은 영화를 시작으로 영상산업에서 문자 그대로 ‘볼거리’로서의 스펙터클이 재등장하게 되었다. 또한 이와 같은 스펙터클은 2000년대 이후 중국의 다양한 영역에서 등장하였다.
중국의 실경공연은 지역경제를 활성화하고 관광객들에 화려한 볼거리를 제공하는 관광상품이지만 한편으로는 중국 사회의 특수한 상황들과 변화들을 읽어낼 수 있는 창이기도 하다.
현장에서의 경험적인 자료 수집 결과 스펙터클 공연의 지역성과 함께 중앙 정부의 ‘중화민족’에 대한 강한 열망도 중요한 요소로 다루어져야 한다는 점을 파악할 수 있었다. 결국 이 연구는 관광의 맥락 속에 관광상품 중 하나인 스펙터클 공연을 위치시키고 이를 지역과 중앙의 상호작용, 즉 지역성의 부각과 중화민족에 대한 가치 부여 사이의 경합과 긴장을 파악할 수 있는 장소로 보려는 시도이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this study, I tried to analyse the socio-cultural meanings of Natural Landscape Performances which are very famous as tourist commodity in People's Republic of China. This study shows how to conceptualize nature, locality and tourism in modern China. To collect empirical data for this study, I interviewed some experts, tourists and residents and conducted participant observation in Lijiang, Kunming and Hangzhou in October 2013 and in Shanghai and Beijing in January 2014.
Literally Natural Landscape Performances are defined as comprehensive spectacular art performances performed massive several hundreds of performers with high technologies as flashy lightings, computer-controlled mechanical equipments and so on. Nowadays, several indoor performances in some region of China also emphasize spectacular scenes to attract tourists.
We can say that, in a sense, after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, China's modern history was a continuous spectacle. Spectacle played a role to show off political power and to inject political ideology to common people. After the Cultural Revolution ended, China is now seeking to change through reform and opening up.
