This study aimed to empirically examine the necessity and effectiveness of takeover education in conditionally automated (Level 3) vehicles. At Level 3, the driver’s obligation to maintain continuous forward attention is relaxed; however, unexpected situations or system limitations may require immediate takeover, and failure to respond properly can result in serious accidents. Existing traffic safety education is largely designed under the assumption of full manual driving, and thus does not sufficiently address takeover responses in automated driving environments. Accordingly, this study sought to verify the effectiveness of takeover education and propose directions for a new traffic safety education framework.
For this purpose, five scenarios were designed based on highway and expressway environments. Experiments were conducted using a driving simulator, through which both survey responses and driving data were collected and analyzed. Non-driving-related tasks (NDRT) were incorporated to simulate realistic driving conditions. Participants were licensed drivers, divided into two groups: one that received both education and system guidance, and another that received only system guidance.
The analysis revealed that while both groups acknowledged the need for autonomous vehicle safety education, the educated group perceived greater benefits. Simulator data further showed that the educated group consistently demonstrated shorter takeover response times, higher avoidance success rates, and improved driving stability, with these differences becoming more evident through repeated trials. In contrast, the guidance-only group exhibited greater individual variability and relatively limited improvements in stability.
These findings suggest that takeover education is not merely supplementary but serves as a meaningful means of ensuring road safety. Furthermore, this study contributes by presenting directions for traffic safety education in the era of autonomous vehicles and emphasizing the need to establish policy frameworks linked to the driver licensing system.
