Although AI-based learning platforms are being introduced in schools, there is still a lack of instructional design models that reflect the characteristics of elementary English and allow flexible use of AI, edutech, and traditional materials. This study aimed to develop instructional design principles and a model for adaptive elementary English instruction in an AI-enhanced digital learning environment. A design and development research approach was used, including a literature review, an exploratory study with elementary English teachers, and two rounds of expert validation. As a result, six components and thirteen design principles were developed. The model was applied in an eight-session class with 36 third-grade students. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, surveys, and interviews. The results suggest that students’ speaking accuracy and fluency tended to improve, while interest, confidence, and perceived usefulness of digital tools increased, and anxiety decreased. Teachers were also able to design different lesson types based on the level of AI use and types of materials. These findings may suggest the potential use of the model in classroom settings. However, the study was conducted in one school, and further research in diverse contexts may be needed.
