손양원과 구라(救癩) 선교 = 애양원(愛養院)교회에서의 활동을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

애양원을 설립한 윌슨은 극심한 고통을 동반하는 대풍자유를 치료약으로 사용하면서, 그 치료 과정을 이겨낼 의지와 신앙에 기반한 도덕성(윌슨은 이를 영적 영향mental influence이라고 지칭하였다)을 치료의 필수 조건이라고 생각했다. 그러한 입장에서 그는 ‘믿음과 대풍자유’라는 모토를 내세우고 애양원교회 성원들로 하여금 성경 공부와 기도회에 참석할 것을 요구하였다.
그에 비해 손양원 목사는 환자들을 구호의 대상보다는 기독교 신앙을 가져야 하는 ‘인간’의 하나로 보고 그들과의 ‘라포’를 형성하는 데에 주력하였다. 그는 전임 교역자, 의사들과는 달리 환자들과의 신체적 접촉을 마다하지 않았다. 이는 손양원 목사가 환자들의 신뢰를 얻는 주된 요인이었다. 이처럼 일반인들이 가까이 하지 않는 환자들을 거리낌 없이 대하고, 그들과 삶을 함께 했다는 점에서 손양원 목사의 구라 사역은 상당히 주목을 끈다.
손양원 목사가 한센병 환자들을 그토록 가까이 할 수 있었던 것은 무엇보다도 신앙적 열정이 있었기 때문이다. 또 한편으로 ‘천년왕국’이 곧 임하여 지상의 모든 질병과 고난이 사라질 것이라는 종말론적 신앙관을 추구했기 때문이기도 하다.
손양원 목사의 신앙관과 구라사업 활동은 언뜻 보기에 현대 의학의 발달에 따라 그 의미가 퇴색되어 가는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 한센병 환자들에 대한 그의 순수한 열정과 헌신은 기독교적 봉사의 전형을 보여준다는 점에서 간과할 수 없다. 나아가 그가 부르짖은 ‘전쾌’론도 질병이 없고 전쟁이 없는 평화로운 사회를 갈망한다는 점에서 현대 한국 기독교회에 던지는 시사점이 적지 않다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Robert Manton Wilson, who established AeYangWon emphasized the need to long for morality that is based on faith. He thought that Hansen’s disease resulted from moral paralysis. On this prejudice he underlined ‘mental influence’ when preaching a sermon to lepers. To maintain ‘mental influence,’ he encouraged lepers to concentrate on Bible study and prayer service. In this angle Wilson made lepers 'othering' who are to be supported by normal.
But Rev. Son treated them as ordinary people that have to be restored and renewed. From that point of view on lepers, he had physical contact with lepers actively. Therefore patients could trust him, and Under his guidance, the AeYangWon and AeYangWon-church had grown to a mature ecclesiastical community. In this respect Son Yang-won was prominent Church leader.
He often mentioned that when Jesus return to earth every lepers would be completely cured by the power of Faith. Actually he was premillenarian. as a premillenarian, he believe that all disease on earth would be disappeared by Christ.
On this belief Son Yang-won emphasized the importance of preparing for The Second Advent of Christ, and pushed lepers to concentrate on religious life. Because of him the lepers of AeYangWon stuck on religious belief on the millennium, so that they couldn't prepare economical background to meet the new policy on lepers that focus on building settlements in 1960s'. but Son Yang-won's leprosy relief was warmly received by the lepers at that time.
