국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 고등학교 자연 계열 학생들의 과학 과목 선택 현황과 태도를 지구과학을 중심으로 파악하여 고교 지구과학 교육의 방향 정립에 도움을 주고자 한다. 이를 위해 서울 경기 지역의 고등학교 2, 3학년 자연 계열 학생 716명을 대상으로 과학 과목에 대한 흥미, 자신감, 내신 선택 과목, 수능 예정 과목 등을 성, 거주지, 내신 성적, 과학 성적 등의 측면에서 분석했다. 학생들이 학교에서 가장 많이 선택하는 과학 과목이 지구과학1이었는데, 선택 이유로 가장 많은 학생들이 학교에서 선택하게 했다는 점을 들었다. 한편, 수능 예정 과목에서는 지구과학이 다른 과학 과목들보다 적게 선택되었는데, 그 이유로 지구과학에 대한 이해 부족과 진로와의 관련성이 적은 점을 들었다. 지구 과학은 도시 지역 학생들보다는 농어촌 학생들의 선택율이 특히 높았고, 성취 수준이 상이나 중인 학생들의 선택율이 높았다. 본 연구 결과를 통해, 지구 환경 문제 해결에 중요한 역할을 담당하는 지구과학에 대한 이미지 개선의 필요성이 제기된다.

This study pursues the new directions of earth science education through an analysis of the trends in high school students' course selection and their attitudes toward science subjects. We sampled 716 11th and 12th grade students in natural science courses in the Seoul Metropolitan area and surveyed their interests in science subjects, their confidence, the subjects that they selected, and their expectations with respect to science subjects in the Korean SAT (scholastic aptitude test) from the perspectives of gender, living area, and achievement. Surprisingly, Earth Science1 was selected by most of the respondents, but they had selected it because their school had forced them to select it. At the same time, few students expected Earth Science1 to be a Korean SAT subject. Students in rural area rather than in urban area, and high- and medium-achieving students rather than low-achieving students tended to select Earth Science1. We therefore suggest that a more positive image for earth science be pursued as it is an invaluable subject and very important to the solving of environmental problems.
