1950년대 아시아재단의 민족문화유산 지원 연구 - 국립중앙박물관 지원을 중심으로 - = A Study on a Support for National Cultural Heritage by the Asia Foundation in the 1950s - Focusing on a Support for the National Museum of Korea -

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Asia Foundation, which gave an aid to South Korea in the 1950s, had recognized that “natural cultural heritage corresponds to allied forces of fighting communism.” The Asia Foundation in the 1950s carried out a support for the museum operation expenses and the museum serial publication through a medium called Kim Jae-won who is the director of the National Museum of Korea. The Foundation was convinced of which the realm that South Korea of having been in the worst political situation can be acknowledged in the world is traditional cultural heritage. A support for this led to its intention of offsetting South Korea’s backwardness. Their support contributed even to creating a new system. The Asia Foundation propped up a scholarship fund for studying in America and for preparing a doctoral thesis of Kim Won-ryong who had been an employee at the National Museum of Korea, thereby having given a helping hand so that he can acquire a U.S. doctorate relevant to archeology. Kim Won-ryong, who returned from abroad after passing through this process, resigned his seat at the National Museum of Korea and then established the Department of Archeology at Seoul National University. After this, the Asia Foundation backed up the graduates from the Department of Archeology so that they can participated in managing cultural assets as an intern, thereby having offered a help for this system to be settled. This support in the Asia Foundation for traditional cultural heritage may be understood as well in the context of an ideological battle surrounding cultural properties. From this perspective, it may be newly illuminated even the context that the National Museum of South Korea positively publicized its heritage through overseas exhibition with emphasizing Silla culture.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1950년대 한국을 원조한 아시아재단은 “민족문화유산은 공산주의에 맞서는 동맹군”이라는 인식을 가지고 있었다. 1950년대에 아시아재단은 국립중앙박물관장 김재원을 매개로 박물관 운영 경비, 박물관 총서 시리즈 출판 지원 등을 수행했다. 재단은 최악의 정치적 상황에 처해 있던 남한이 세계에서 인정받을 수 있는 영역이 전통적 문화유산이라고 확신했으며, 이에 대한 지원을 통해 남한의 낙후성을 상쇄하려 했다. 그들의 지원은 새로운 제도의 창출에도 기여했다. 아시아재단은 국립박물관 직원이었던 김원룡의 미국 유학과 박사학위 논문 작성에 장학금을 지원함으로써 그가 고고학 관련 미국 박사학위를 취득할 수 있도록 도왔다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐 귀국한 김원룡은 국립박물관을 사직하고 서울대학교 고고학과를 설립했다. 이후 아시아재단은 고고학과 졸업생들이 인턴으로 문화재 관리에 참여할 수 있도록 지원함으로써 이 제도가 정착하는 데에도 도움을 주었다. 이러한 아시아재단의 전통문화유산 지원은 문화재를 둘러싼 심리전의 맥락에서도 이해될 수 있다. 이러한 관점에 서면 당시 남한의 국립박물관이 신라 문화를 강조하고 그 유산을 해외 전시를 통해 적극적으로 홍보한 맥락도 새롭게 조명될 수 있다.
