Unlike other traditional young adult fiction where violence was intentionally avoided for the educational purpose, S. E. Hinton’s new realism novels such as Outsiders and Rumble Fish unmask the naked violence inherent in our society and the following unavoidable adolescent frustrations. Especially the two most innocent main characters in the story, Ponyboy and Johnny suffer most from the irony of their involvement of the crime despite their pure idealism. However the novel’s unhappy ending of Johnny’s death is not an indication of the simple accusation of the social evil or adolescent dismal fatalism. Like the motif phrase of Robert Frost’s poem, “Nothing gold can stay,” the novel seemingly praises the flower, gold and perfection, but does not despair of loss and grief in being leaf and something lackluster and imperfect. On the one hand, in Hinton’s adolescent new realism novels the transience of all the Edenic precious thing is emphasized through the young adult’s susceptible viewpoint. On the other hand, just as the dawn soon changes into the day, a connotation of healing memory of green and gold, along with the unconventional morality and golden rule, is imaginatively and permanently shared and cherished by all the members of society through the reading of the sacrifice and innocence of young erroneous ones.
