A patch antenna has an advantage from the fact that it can be easily implemented on PCB. However, its radiation efficiency becomes degraded due to the PEC(Perfect Electric Conductor) ground plane. On the other hand, artificial PMC(Perfect Magnetic Conductor) can make the reflected wave to have the same phase as the incident wave so that the radiated waves can be constructively interfered with each other. The meta materials making this structure have been developed, one of which is called as EBG(Electro-magnetic bandgap). In this paper, we will present the structure of EBG reflector to improve the radiation efficiency of a patch antenna. For this purpose, it will be considered the cell arrangement on EBG reflector and the permittivity of the antenna substrate.
