      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

International System is a core concept in the discipline of international relations. The concept is frequently used to understand and explain international political phenomena. However, it may not true of explicating international relations of East Asia due to its Eurocentric nature. That is why the arbitrary concept of ‘East Asian regional system’ was created and has been used.
This article reviewed structural realists’ concepts of the international system. It also disclosed that the concept has been developed in the direction of geopolitical one, which is comprised of regional continental systems and global maritime system. The concept of geopolitical international system has the advantage of well capturing the modernization of international system. This article attempted to explain history of modern East Asia from 1895 to 1945 through the international political mechanism, which is derived from the concept of geopolitical international system.
It was argued that international relations of East Asia was different from that of Western Europe with regard to the two aspects. From the point of polarity, while modern international relations of Western Europe resulted from multi-polarity, that of East Asia was concerned with bi-polarity. And in view of type of conflict, modern international conflicts of Western Europe is associated with the matter of continental rivalry, whereas that of East Asia is related to the issue of maritime-continental confrontation or maritime rivalry. This article also included implications for today’s East Asian international relations.
