토마스 머튼의 영성 신학적 입장에서 조명한 한국 개신교의 기도 문화에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

토마스 머튼의 영성신학의 특징은 ‘자기(self)’에 대한 끊임없는 천착과 강조, 세상과 끊임없이 소통하며 그곳에 속한 사람들을 영적으로 인도하고자 했던 점, 그리고 현실참여적 성향이 강하다는 것이다.
한국 개신교의 기도문화의 특징은 다음 세 가지, 즉 새벽기도의 중요성에 대한 강조, 통성기도의 보편적 확산 그리고 기복적 성향의 기도의 보편화로 정리해볼 수 있다. 이와 함께 기도와 관련하여 토마스 머튼이 강조했던 점은 기도를 통한 ‘하나님과의 합일’, 하나님께 자신의 모든 것을 내려놓는 태도를 갖는 것과 마지막으로 기도함에 있어 이타적 태도를 갖는 것이었다.
토마스 머튼의 영성 신학적 특징 중 하나인 ‘자기’에 대한 끊임없는 천착과 강조의 측면에서 볼 때 새벽기도는 일상의 생활 가운데 신도들이 자기 자신에게 집중할 수 있는 가장 적합한 시기적 특징을 가진다. 다음으로 통성기도가 보편적으로 확산된 환경은 신도들로 하여금 머튼이 강조했던 부분인 ‘자기’에 집중하는 것을 방해하게 만든다. 기도함에 있어 이타적 태도를 가질 것을 강조했던 토마스 머튼의 입장에서 한국교회의 기복적 기도 문화를 조명해 본다면 최소한 어느 정도의 비판의 목소리는 피할 수 없을 것으로 여겨진다. 그러나 이타적 신앙을 기반으로 현실문제에 적극적으로 참여하기를 강조했던 머튼의 입장에서 한국교회의 비교적 높은 현실참여적 성향은 고무적 현상으로 평가될 수도 있을 것이다.

The characteristics of Thomas Merton's spiritual theology is as follows: emphasizing the continuing focus on the "self", providing people with spiritual guidance by communicating continuously with the world, and active involvement in social issues.
The characteristics of the culture of prayer in Korean Protestantism could be summarized in the following three points: emphasis on the importance of dawn prayer, prevalence of audible prayer, and orientation of praying for good fortune. In addition, when it comes to prayer Thomas Merton put emphasis on to "be united with God" through prayer, to have an attitude of putting all of their things down to God, and to have an altruistic attitude in prayer.
From the perspective of the unceasing emphasis on the self, which is one of the spiritual theological features of Thomas Merton, dawn prayer is the most appropriate time when believers may completely focus on themselves during everyday life. Next, the prevalent circumstance of audible prayer makes it difficult for believers to concentrate on the self, which is a part of Merton's emphasis. From the Merton's view of putting emphasis on having an altruistic attitude in prayer, it would be difficult to avoid at least some criticism.
