Bokjang refers to objects installed inside a Buddhist statue as well as the ritual accompanying such installation. Along with the eye-painting ritual of an image, it is one of the most defining rituals of Buddhism. Objects installed inside a Buddhist statue widely varied, ranging from votive text to huryeongtong (a container inside which votive objects are placed), sutras and scriptures, clothes, and textiles. However, gaining a comprehensive insight into this religious practice has been rather difficult, due, on the one hand, to the state of preservation of related artifacts, and, on the other hand, to the inaccessibility of the ritual to the public. This explains why there have been few attempts at understanding the overall composition of installed votive objects, and most studies on the subject have thus far focused on the sculptors of images or individual items. This study is an attempt to discern how the practice of bokjang evolved over time, by looking at changes that occurred to its three central components; namely, huryeongtong, obobyeong (a bottle containing textiles of five colors), and hwangchopokja (yellow cloth used to wrap huryeongtong). These changes are discussed in relation to the standard procedures outlined in Josanggyeong, a Joseon-period scripture describing procedures concerning the creation and preparation of a Buddhist statue in Buddhist temples.
In Korea, votive objects were generally installed in a Buddhist statue following related recommendations in Josanggyeong, both concerning the types of objects and procedure of enshrinement. Huryeongtong and oboyeong were two central objects, considered the heart of a Buddhist statue. Huryeongtong, consisting of a casket and a tube during the Goryeo period, evolved, during the Joseon period, into a cylindrical container with a bottleneck-like opening at the top (huhyeol) and a lid decorated with eight leaves (pallyeogae). A similar change also occurred around the same time to obobyeong. Previously a pouch-shaped bottle (obogwabyeong), obobyeong acquired a cylindrical shape also during the Joseon period. Hwanchopokja, meanwhile, came to consist solely of a yellow-colored textile, once into the Joseon period, whereas during the Goryeo period, textiles of other colors were added to a base textile in yellow tone. Huryeongtong, obobyeong and hwangchopokja, the three central components of the bokjang custom, therefore, had varying shapes and aspects depending on the period. However, objects such as caskets (hap), tubes (tong), huhyeol, pallyeop and obogwabyeong, mentioned in Josanggyeong, were used already during the Goryeo period. What this says is that there must have been works documenting bokjang-related guidelines and procedures during the Goryeo period, even if none has survived to the present. Josanggyeong must largely draw on these earlier works as well as update them by replacing some of the obsolete elements that were no longer part of the bokjang custom, once into the Joseon period. It may, therefore, be possible that there was a standard bokjang practice in Goryeo, comparable to the one that existed in Joseon, and this practice used hap and tong, rather than huryeongtong, as the principal containers for votive objects.
Bokjang constitutes a little-understood area of Buddhist art. The complex symbolism of this religious practice has been daunting for researchers, as has been the difficulty of accessing related artifacts, which explain the state of research. With new discoveries of bokjang-related artifacts, future research may be able to cast further light on the practice, and this study could serve as a starting point.
