Young LGBTQ+ workers in South Korea frequently experience discrimination and exclusion in the workplace as an extension of the LGBTQ+ hatred that exists in South Korean society. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of discrimination and exclusion in the workplace among young LGBTQ+ workers in South Korea and the specific strategies they employ to respond to these experiences. To this end, 13 research participants with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, and non-binary individuals, were interviewed. Using Charmaz's (2013) constructivist grounded theory, the data were analyzed to derive a total of six categories and 53 subthemes. The research participants experienced “mundane exclusion” in the workplace, which is considered a public space but is also private, centered on heteronormative and gender-binary small talk. In response, they became agents of identity politics by reconfiguring the “public/private boundaries” of how to view the workplace and changing their “workplace identity centrality.”
