이미지(Image) 표현을 중심으로 한 陶彫作品 硏究

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날의 현대도예 양상은 많은 도예가들이 강한 개인적 특성을 가지고 기성의 개념이나 형식의 틀 속에 얽매이지 않고 새로운 소재나 기술을 통해 다양한 표현을 하기 위해 부단히 노력하고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 볼 때 본인의 작품 성격은 정서와 의미에 대해 깊은 관심을 가지고, 어린날의 추억, 근원과 선(禪)에 대한 회상, 모든 것과의 대화(=의미 소통)등을 통해 나의 언어와 상상력에 의하여 형상화된 기호(Sign)로서 또는, 경험된 사실에 대한 사물의 투시의 결과로서 얻어진 것이다.
인간이 미(美)를 추구하려는 욕구 중에 물건을 통하여 형상화시키려는 가장 본질적이고도 원초적인 것을 공예에서 찾아볼 수 있다고 할 때, 도자공예작품은 그 어떤 미술작품보다 가장 자연스럽게 민중과 접촉할 수 있다는 점에서 대단히 만족스러운 표현매체라고 생각한다. 공예작품에 있어서 형태는 기능적인 면에서 그것의 용도를 드러내고 심미적인 면에서는 전체형상이 작가의 의식을 드러내게 되는데 현대공예에 있어서는 기능성외에도 보다 장식적인 면 에서의 조형성을 중요시 하는 경향을 나타내고 있다.
본인은 예술과 생활 사이에 가까이 결속되어 있다고 생각되는 개인적이고 물질적이며, 또는 환경에 관련된 것에서부터 사회적 개념에 맞는 예술적 어휘를 발견하고 생활의 느낌을 표현하려고 하였다.
작품의 주제는 추억(Recollection, Memory), 대화(Communication)로 설정하였다. 이것은 인간의 공통적이면서도 개인적인 경험에서 비롯한 인간의 감정이나 뜻을 나타내어 새로운 의미와, 자신과 주변의 문화, 나아가 사회적 기능을 가진 현실의 반영을 유도할 수 있는 소재이기 때문이다.
작품 표현에 있어, 물레성형보다는 자유롭게 Hand-Building 으로 만들고, 때로는 석고틀을 이용하였고 판 성형방법도 이용하였다. 이러한 다양한 성형방법은 물(物)에 대한 지각경험을 조형화 하는데 있어서 경험의 질과 양의 개인적 능력을 확대시키기 때문이다.
부분적인 문양이나 그림, 그밖의 재질적인 표현요소들은 표현적 혹은 장식적 측면에서 전체 형태와 유기적인 연관을 갖는데 균형, 비례, 조화 등으로 공예의 본질, 즉 생활에서 잉태된 풍요로움과 생활의 격을 높여주는, 또 생활의 꿈을 심어주는 역활을 위하여 인간의 생활과 밀착된 인간적인 "삶의 예술"이기를 바라는 의도로 자연에 대한 감정과 그리고 우주와 생존의 조건들에 관념성을 대화, 추억 등으로 관련시켜 현대의 통신 매체의 주역인 편지, 전화기를 통하여 인간의 심성을 상징화 시키고자 하였다. 즉 이미지에 대응하는 물(物)에 의하여 조형활동이 구체적으로 형상화되어 그 결과로 물(物)과 정신의 결합체로서의 작품으로 표현하고자 하였다. 이러한 현대 커뮤니케이션 시스템(Communication System)의 형상매체를 통하여 일상적인 것을 색다른 것으로 바꾸어 표현 하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Many of potters of the day, having strong individualities of their own, are found making constant efforts to attain variant artistic expression by means of innovative materials and techniques, free of any established ideas or forms. As for my work, I could say that it has been forged either as a sign shaped by combination of my own language and my own imagination produced by memories of my earliest days, recollections of origin of things and Zen, and dialogues with all nature (a sort of communication of soul) or an outcome obtained by true realization of all things I have experienced.
As arts and crafts are believed to be most primitive and essential of all types of arts created by human instinct seeking beauty, so ceramics are most satisfying expressionist media of all art works in light of the fact that they are exposed to the masses most easily. It is well known that functionally the shape of a technical art work indicates practical use of the work, while in esthetical terms it represents inward consciousness of the artist as a whole. On the contrary, modern technology tends to make much of its decorative modeling in addition to the functionalism of a work.
In any case I have tried to discover in artistic language never spoken before and to express my everyday feelings in that language, the language that is able to express something clearly existing between life and art, individually and socially.
I have titled my work "Recollection, Memory, Communication" as I believe it can convey one's feeling and thinking involved in his experiences, both individual and social, thus reflecting realities composed to newly introduced ideas of other people and mine, various cultures of the world, and social functions.
In the course of working, I used a free-hand-building method rather than wheeling, employing slab casting as well as plaster molding from time to time, since such a composition of various methods may serve to better figure my experience in things (see Note 1) both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Faithful to intrinsic qualities of technical art, that is to say, upgrading quality and richness of life and giving a dream to people, and desiring to create an "Art of Life" attached to our real life, I have paid a close attention to the whole proportion in putting in patterns, pictures and other decorative elements here and there; and also I made use of the modern communication media in the form of letter and telephone receiver to the effect that we communicate our feelings to the nature and the universe and to our past days. I have also attempted to harmonize the world of my image with things which often seem to stand in the way of the former. The figurative media of modern communication system as applied to my work, I hope, will succeed in turning our daily experience so dull into something fresh.
