공간 능력 연구를 위한 몇 가지 제안 = Some Ideas for the Future Research of Spatial Skills

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 공간능력과 관련된 기존의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 하여 몇 가지 문제점 및 앞으로의 연구 방향을 제안하였다. 첫째, '공간 감각', '공간 시각화', '공간 지각', '공간 방위' 등과 같은 '공간' 관련 용어들이 개념이 불명확하며, 각 용어간의 구분이 명확하지 않다는 점이다. 본고에서는 이러한 개념간의 혼동을 피하기 위하여 '공간 능력'이라는 용어를 사용하였지만, 차후에는 각 용어에 대한 개념의 정립과 더불어 하위 개념 간의 위계도가 정비되어야 할 것으로 보인다.
둘째, 기존의 연구 결과들이 공간능력과 수학성취간의 상관관계를 통해 성급하게 공간능력과 수학성취간의 인과관계를 추론하고 있다는 점이다. 대체로 공간능력이 높은 학생이 수학성취에서도 높은 점수를 기록하는 것은 사실이지만, 공간능력의 향상이 과연 성공적인 수학수행을 보장하겠는가하는 점은 입증된 바 없다. 따라서 차후 공간능력과 수학성취간의 상호작용 메카니즘이 보다 구체적으로 밝혀질 필요가 있다.
셋째, 공간능력 연구에서 성차가 보다 체계적으로 고려되어야 한다. 많은 연구가 공간능력에서 남성의 우세를 입증하여왔지만, 공간 능력의 광범위함을 고려 할 때 여성의 우세를 볼 수 있는 기능 또한 고려해 볼만하다. 뿐만 아니라 공간능력과 수학성취 간의 상관 연구에서도 성차에 따른 연구결과의 차이를 보이고 있다. 차후에는 공간능력과 수학성취와의 상관 연구는 성차가 고려된 가운데 보다 세부적으로 수행되는 것이 바람직할 것이다.

Spatial skills have been considered to be important variables affecting mathematics achievement. However recently a few studies get to report the different results from the traditional hypothesis. It will be necessary to check the old one and consider the other possible perspectives on the relationships of spatial skills, gender and mathematics performance. The purpose of this paper is to explore such new perspectives for the future studies of spatial skills. For this, this paper has the following three parts;(1) the problem of meaning of spatial skills, (2) the problem of mechanism between spatial skills and mathematics achievement, (3) the problem of gender difference in spatial skills and mathematics achievement.
