Lime is an umbrella term forburntlime (CaO)and hydrated lime Ca(OH)2 generated when burntlime iscombined with water,and hasbeen widelyutilized since the inception offresco paintingtechniquesformuralsonplastersintheRomanempire.Inparticular,limefrom Firenze ischaracterizedascontainingqualitycolorfixationandahighlevelofinternalfirmness.
Anintriguingquestion,experimentingwithdifferenttypesoflimeputtowideuseinpaintings,arose with regard to how lime can fitinto the terrain ofengobe used forceramics,thatis,whetherengobe could be replaced with lime and whatkinds ofchemicalreactions could transpire when lime was combined with such materials as common brick powdercontaining much oxidized steeland sand lime brick powder composed ofsand and hydrated lime.
Accordingly,thepresentstudywasintendedtoprovideopportunitiestoconsideramorediverse arrayofpossibilitiesofmaterialsdevelopment.
In general,Firenze lime used in Fresco paintings emits high-quality shades ofcolor.Also,there existvaried types ofFirenze lime products.Because ofthis manifold nature ofFirenze lime,however,thescopeofthepresentexperimentwaslimitedtoexaminingpotentialutilityof dippedlime,oneofthosevariousFirenzelimeproducts,morespecifically,dippedlimethatwas madeofFirenzelimeproducedin2005and2009,byinvestigating(a)itsdurabilitywhenapplied to a testpiece with an appropriate levelofdensityafterhaving gone through the glaze firing process,(b)whetheritwas dissolved by glaze,(c)whetherthe glazing process caused any undesirableconsequences(e.g.,being cracked,being rolled up,etc.),and(d)whetheritcame off the surface despite differences in contraction percentage. The present research was conductedasanattempttofurtherourunderstandingofhow otherrelevantmaterialscouldbe exploited in pottery,and thus,willlikelycontribute to broadening possibilities in ourefforts to developceramicmaterialsandexpandingtheartisticspectrum ofarteducation
