고대영어 구개음화와 파찰음화에 관한 연구

Palatalization in OE has often been dealt with in many analyses due to its phonetic, phonological and morphological importance in the grammar. The theoretical issues on this change can be related to two questions: Can we explain all of the relevant data? and can we explain why palatalization is present when it is not expected and why it is absent when it is expected? The main goal of this study is to analyze palatalization in Old English (OE) within the framework of Optimality Theory with candidate chains (OT-CC) (McCarthy 2007).
Compared with the previous analyses including rule-based analyses, the proposed analysis is shown to be more successful on explanatory ground as well as in empirical coverage. The proposed analysis can incorporate not only the apparent and true palatalization but also the transparent and opaque cases of palatalization under the same hierarchy of the constraints. It is argued that OT-CC, developed to explain phonological opacity, has advantage over any other theoretical tools, in explaining the opaque cases produced by the interaction of palatalization and umlaut in OE.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

고대영어 구개음화현상은 음성적, 음운적, 형태적으로 고대영어 문법에 깊은 영향을 미치고 있는 현상으로서 여러 학자들에 의해 다양한 분석이 이루어져 왔다. 특히 이 현상의 이론적 논점은 다음 두 질문과 밀접한 관련되어 있다. 첫째, 해당 현상의 모든 자료를 기술적으로 설명할 수 있는가? 둘째, 왜 구개음화가 기대되는 곳에서 구개음화가 일어나지 않고, 구개음화가 기대되지 않는 곳에서 구개음화가 일어나는지 설명할 수 있는가? 이 두 질문은 고대영어 구개음화현상이라는 이름하에 다양한 패턴이 존재하고 이를 하나의 규칙이면 규칙, 제약이면 제약으로 통합하여 어렵다는 것을 시사한다. 본 연구에서는 고대영어 구개음화 현상을 최적성이론의 OT-CC 모델(McCarthy 2007)에서 분석해 보고, 그 결과가 기존의 연구들과 비교하여 어떠한 장점이 있는가 알아보고자 한다.
선행연구와 비교하여 본 연구결과는 다음과 같은 장점을 가진다. 첫째, 고대영어 구개음화현상을 두 개로 구분된 규칙이 아닌 하나로 통합된 언어 보편적 제약의 위계에 의한 설명을 가능하게 해 준다. 둘째, 기존의 연구에서 설명하지 못한 고대영어 구개음화 자료들을 설명해 주어 기술적 타당성에 있어 보다 성공적이다. 셋째, 고대영어 구개음화 현상에서 나타난 서로 달라 보이는 다양한 패턴들―구개음화가 기대되는 곳에서 구개음화가 일어나지 않고, 구개음화가 기대되지 않은 곳에서 구개음화가 일어나는―즉, 불투명한 경우들을 하나의 동일한 제약의 위계에 의해 예외적인 현상이 아닌 구개음화 현상의 일부로 통합시켜 설명해 줄 수 있다. 마지막으로, 본 연구를 통해 OT-CC 모델은 불투명한 경우들을 설명하는데 성공적인 이론의 틀임을 확인할 수 있다.
