대학생들의 영어 능력과 형용사 이해도의 상관관계 연구 = (A) Study of correlation between undergradustes' english competence and their comprehension ability of english adjectives

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 영어 학습자들의 영어능력과 형용사 이해도 간의 관계를 실증적으로 구명하기 위하여 대학생 학습자들의 영어 능력과 형용사 이해도 사이에 어떠한 상관관계가 존재하는지 살펴보았다. 또한, 영어 형용사 한정용법과 서술용법 중에서 학습자들이 더 어려워하는 것은 어떠한 것이며 그 원인은 무엇인지도 살펴보았다. 이와 더불어, 학습자들의 영어 형용사 어순에 관한 학습자들의 이해정도와 그들의 영어 형용사 학습 실태도 같이 알아보았다. 연구 결과, 대학생 학습자들의 영어 능력과 형용사 이해도 사이에는 통계적으로 유의미한 정적 상관관계가 존재하며 그들의 문법영역의 학습이 형용사 이해도에 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 본 연구의 피험자들은 영어 형용사 서술용법에 대해 한정용법보다 더 낮은 이해도를 보였다. 대학생 학습자들은 영어 형용사 어순에 대해 낮은 이해도를 보였고 영어 형용사 학습실태를 조사한 결과 전반적으로 영어 형용사 학습 경험을 지니고 있으며 형용사 학습의 중요성도 인지하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study was designed to analyze Korean undergraduates’ comprehension ability of English Adjectives, which are very important grammatical items to develop students’ communication competence. More specifically, this study tries to figure out if there is correlation between participants’ English competence and the comprehension ability of English adjectives. Also, this study examines learners’ comprehension ability of attributive adjectives, predicative adjectives and word order rules concerning the position of the English adjective as well as suggests alternatives to reduce errors in using English adjectives. Conducted in 2006 in the Pusan National University, this study selected 33 undergraduates, who have studied English since middle school. Employed correlation and frequency analysis of the collected data yielded the following results:
(1) This study showed that there is correlation between participants’ English competence and the comprehension ability of English adjectives.
(2) This study indicated that participants had difficulty in understanding predicative adjectives more than attributive adjectives.
(3) This study demonstrated that participants had difficulty in understanding word order rules concerning the position of the English.
(4) This study showed that participants had learned English adjectives before and perceived the importance of English Adjectives.

Based on these results, this study demonstrated that giving explicit explanation of English adjective rules coupled with opportunities to use the rules in situational learning study to learners could have positive influence on reducing English adjectival errors. Also, to help Korean students’ develop a better understanding of English adjectives, new systematic English grammar curricula and English teaching materials are needed.
