해롤드 핀터의 <생일파티> = 폭력과 문화질서

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 핀터의 <생일파티>에 나타난 문화적?정치적 문제를 바탕으로 개인이 문화공동체 내에서 보이지 않는 ‘외부의 힘’에 의해 자아를 상실하는 과정을 고찰한다. 문화공동체가 요구하는 인물로 변화되는 과정인 스탠리의 생일파티는 폭력이 동원되어 강압적으로 진행된다. 이 과정을 통하여 문화공간 내에서의 폭력과 공간의 질서 유지를 위해 개인을 억압하는 힘이 어떻게 작용하는 지 드러난다.
골드버그/ 맥칸은 스탠리에게 폭력을 가하며 그의 변형을 요구한다. 만약 있는 그대로의 스탠리를 용납할 수 없다면, 그들은 어떤 수단을 동원해서라도 문화질서에 순응하는 인물로 재구성한다. 그렇기 때문에 스탠리는 소위 ‘카타르마’ 제의와 같은 통과의례를 거쳐 문화질서에 위배되는 위험 요소를 제거하게 된다. 이는 곧 지라르의 주장처럼, 고도로 발달된 문화질서에로의 통합을 목적으로, 개인에게 부가되는, 폭력/ 억압적 힘의 구조로 볼 수 있다.
핀터는 <생일파티>에서 개인의 자율성이란 사회 질서의 유지와 그것의 재생산을 위해 동화되고 통합되는 사회화의 과정을 무력한 스탠리와 유력한 골드버그/ 맥칸의 상반된 대립으로 동일하게 그려낸다. 골드버그가 스탠리에게 막강한 힘을 행하는 것처럼 보이지만, 골드버그 역시 보이지 않는 힘을 대행하는 ‘하수인’에 불과하다. 그의 목소리는 문화적 동질성의 규범을 입으로 내뿜는 수도관 역할을 할 뿐이기 때문이다. 힘은 그저 목소리를 높일 수 있는 것이 아니라, 원하는 것을 자신의 언어로 거리낌 없이 표현하는 것이어야 한다. 사회의 규범을 말하고, 금기사항을 벌하는 골드버그의 힘은 문화질서 유지를 위한 ‘보이지 않는 힘’의 대행일 뿐이다.
스탠리가 주검처럼 끌려갈 때, 피티는 “스탠, 저자들이 명령하는 대로 내버려 두면 안 돼”라며 소리친다. 그의 절망적 외침은 문화질서 이면에 가려진 폭력과 억압적 힘 앞에 속수무책인 개인의 위협과 공포가 내재되어 있음을 시사한다. 핀터는 <생일파티>에서 저항 가능성을 방해하고, 사회의 갈등을 억누를 수 있는, 보이지 않는 힘의 논리를 폭로한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Birthday Party provides Harold Pinter’s intensive exploration of the process where an individual slided into subjection to the cultural space through external forces.
This study focuses on how the formation, de-formation, and re-formation of Stanley’s identity dramatises for the cultural order. In the process of Stanley’s birthday party, there is some evidence of violence and victimization. In other words, it seems to be a violence passage for Stanley’s rebirth as a proper member of society. These aspects are based on Girard’s theory of violence and the theory of the rites of passage by Van Gennep and Victor Turner. The play emphasizes that the individual suffers defeat by external forces within the cultural space.
For Stanley’s rebirth, Goldberg seems to perform absolute power. Paradoxically, however, our sense of both Goldberg’s power, which assimilates Stanley to the cultural order, and Stanley’s powerlessness stems from the same source. For Goldberg’s power controlling over Stanley does not based on his own power. Goldberg is a sort of a spokesman of an invisible authority, or more precisely, he only functions as a mouthpiece. As the reason, he is spoken rather than speaking, voicing but voiceless. He signifies nothing. He only lends his voice to deliver both cultural order and power.
In this context, The Birthday Party reveals that an individual inevitably assimilate to the cultural order through external forces.
