The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of participation in collective sport programs on development of social adaptive behavior of mentally retarded students. The subjects were 32 mentally retarded students of junior and sector high school for special education, and the subjects were randomly devided into participant group(n=16) and non-participants group(n=16). KISE Developmental Scale(1996) by Korean Institute for Special Education were administered by specialized teachers of the students. The statistical procedures used to analyze the hypotheses were ANCOVAs. The major findings of this study were that mentally retarded students who regularly participated in collective sport activities had significantly higher level of the development of self-support ability, social-emotional behavior, speech ability, cognitive ability, and gross motor skill rather than none-participants. It could be concluded in this study that sport activities had significant effects on the development of social adaptive behaviors of mentally retarded adolescents
