The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Mix ratio on the compressive strength and the heavy metal teachability in the solidified wastes. The solidification precess utilized in this study was cement-based technique.
The mix ratio used in this study varied from 0.05 to 0.30.
Sludge obtained from a electroplating industry was used for the solidification process. Moisture contents of the sludges were 30% and 60%. The moisture content of 30% was selected as a relatively low moisture content whlle that of 60% was as a typical one. Heavy metals selected for this study were Pb, Cu and Cd. The results of the study indicated that there could be on optimum mix ratio(MR) to exhibit the maximum compressive strength of the solidified waste especially when low moisture content sludges are solidified. This kind of trend could also be seen when the parameter, water/cement ratio(W/C ratlo) was used instend of the mix ratio(MR). The optimum mix ratio and W/C ratio for the 30% moisture sludge were 0.1 and 3 respectively in this study.
Other findings from this study were (1) the leachability of heavy metals from the solidified wastes was inversely related to the compressive strength of the wastes, and (2) the leachability of metals was in the order of Cu > Pb > Cd.
