위세 높은 대학 진학에서의 외고 효과 = Effects of Foreign Language High School on Admissions into Prestigious Colleges

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 한국교육고용패널 4~6차(2007-2009)년도 자료를 사용하여 위세 높은 4년제 대학 진학에서의 외국어 고등학교(이하 외고)와 일반계 고등학교 간 차이를 살펴보았다. 아울러 대학 진학에 수학능력시험(이하 수능) 성적이 결정적인 영향을 미치는 점을 감안하여 수능 성적에 대한 외고 효과도 분석하였다. 수능 성적의 경우 회귀분석, 위세 높은 4년제 대학 진학의 경우는 다항로짓분석을 각각 사용하여 외고 효과를 검증하였다. 이 과정에서 선택편의를 최소화함으로써 외고 효과를 보다 엄밀하게 규명하기 위해 경향점수 매칭방법을 사용하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 수능의 경우 가정배경과 학생 및 학교 특성을 통제한 후에도 외고 학생들이 일반계고 학생들에 비해 평균적으로 더 높은 성적을 얻은 것으로 나타났다. 위세 높은 4년제 대학으로의 진학에서도 다른 배경변수를 통제한 후에도 외고 졸업생과 일반계고 졸업생 사이에 작지만 유의미한 차이가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 경향점수 매칭모형을 활용하여 추가적으로 실시한 분석에서도 수능 성적에 대한 외고 효과는 여전히 유의미한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 하지만 수능 성적을 통제하였을 때 위세 높은 4년제 대학 진학에서의 외고 효과는 유의미하지 않은 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 연구결과는 위세 높은 대학으로 진학하는 데 외고 졸업생들이 누리는 이점의 대부분은 이들이 외고 진학을 통해 우수한 수능 성적을 얻음으로써 발생하고 있을 개연성을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Drawing on fourth-sixth wave data from the Korean Education and Employment Panel, this study investigated differences in performance on the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) as well as in the likelihood of being admitted into a prestigious four-year college between foreign vs. academic high school graduates. Multivariate analyses showed that there were significant differences in the level of CSAT performance favoring foreign language high school graduates even after controlling for family background and school achievement. In addition, attending a foreign language high school was found to be associated with a small but significant increase in the odds of entering a selective four-year college after controlling for the other variables including CSAT performance. Propensity score matching analysis confirmed that attending a foreign language high school had a positive effect on the level of CAST performance, but found no significant effect on the likelihood of entering a selective four-year college. Together, these findings suggest that attending a foreign language high school exerts rather an indirect effect via the CSAT performance on the odds
