소록도 한센인의 사회적 공간 구성과 종교적 헤게모니

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is intended to explore the practices of religious hegemony, which has impacted on the way of life of Hansen people in Sorokdo island since the period of Korea’s Independence upto 1980s. I investigated the documents in this connections and performed field work in Sorokdo island, where the cooperative tensions have been prevailed among the institutions such as the Protestant and the Catholic churches on the one hand and the hospital authority on the other end. Particularly, the religious institutions were in critical position to carry on the patients’ life and to establish their community in this confined island. The hospital is initially authorized how to arrange the space for the benefit of the patients and the hospital staffs as well. This space allotment has been forced to limit the patient’s living area and to be monitored in order to control their daily life intimately. On top of this, the living conditions of resources were extremely limited among the patients. Accounted for all these, the religious institutes have been worked as the central role to establish Hansen patient community and recognize their identity. Therefore, it is not easy to grasp the life style and the experiences without assessing the religious functions in the island.
The Hansen patients could build their own community and make safeguard for their interests and rights for themselves and build the solidarity community and the gathering occasions through the religions, The religions have served as a spiritual framework for establishing the life of Hansen patients, from which the autonomous community, the school system, the literary activity, and the community code and order, and finally their own ethics have been possible. However, the limited resources and the power allowance of the authority have created the contest and the conflict among the Protestant church and the Catholic church, and the hospital authority was added up to its confusions. The contest and the conflict should not be evaluated from the view of “right or wrong” of the religious functions. It should be understood as the ecological problematics, unique only to this isolated island, Sorokdo. This island has succinctly unfolded its situations, occurred by the intimacy between Protestant church, Catholic church, Hospital Authority. The confined patients, however, amazingly activate their sense of life in such a poor condition and limited resource, under control of the surveillance system in such an small island of Sorokdo.
