This study investigated the idea that urban size is related to the magnitude of the Urban Heat Island Effect.Assuming that surface temperatures reflect air temperatures, hence urban heat island effect, we tried to find therelationship between the size of an urban area and its associated surface temperature. A positive relationship betweenurban size and surface temperature would reveal that urban planners should design more “green areas” of vegetation forreducing heat island effects. In this study, we also tested the relationship between surface temperature and the amountof vegetation cover within a city. The results showed that the larger the size of the urban area, the higher the surfacetemperature will be. Conversely, the higher the coverage of vegetation, the lower the surface temperature is. Inparticular, surface temperatures are significantly reduced with just 12% coverage of vegetated surfaces within a singleunit area (3km×3km). The results imply that urban planning for a large city should consider multiple green areas of atleast 12% in developing areas for reducing the urban heat island effect.
