This study investigates the semantic extension of the loanword line (라인) using Korean newspaper data spanning from 1922 to 2025 within a cognitive linguistic framework. The analysis demonstrates that line has undergone systematic semantic expansion from an originally concrete spatial meaning to a range of abstract domains, including functional processes, interpersonal relations, organizational structures, temporal and narrative sequencing, and bodily-aesthetic representation. Despite this diversification, the word retains core semantic features such as arrangement, flow, and connection, with its extended meanings structured through a linear schema that maps embodied spatial experience onto abstract conceptual domains.
Although line partially overlaps with the meanings of the English source word, it has developed distinct semantic networks within Korean sociocultural discourse. Expressions such as Love Line, S line, and VIP line illustrate its use in encoding relational, identity-based, and affiliational meanings in contemporary Korean usage. It also coexists with existing Korean lexical items, while occupying semantic and pragmatic niches not fully covered by these alternatives.
Overall, the findings suggest that semantic change in loanwords reflects an interaction between universal cognitive mechanisms, such as image schema transformation and metaphorical mapping, and language-specific sociocultural discourse practices that shape how meanings are extended and conventionalized over time.
