The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of DP finish on cellulosic fabrics such as cotton, ramie and rayon in terms of resin penetration and changes of physical properties.
Fabrics were treated with DMDHEU resins and the MgCl_2 catalyst using the Pad-Dry-Cure technique. Resin concentrations of the bath were 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% and the catalyst concentrations were 2%, 3% and 4%, on the weight of resin. To understand the migration of the resin, treated fabrics were dyed with direct Red 81 and their dye contents and color depths were analyzed. Resin add-ons were shown to be in the following order : rayon > cotton > ramie for all the resin concentrations. Wrinkle recovery angles(WRA) increased as the resin concentrations increased in the following order cotton > rayon > remie. The relation between add-ons and WRA results of various fabrics were attributed to the even distribution of the resins. For the cotton and ramie, the breaking and tearing strength deceased as the resin add-ons increased. For the rayon fabrics, the breaking strength and tearing strength increased compared to the control at the lower add-ons of resins. As the concentrations increased, however, those strengths decreased. As the catalyst concentration increased, WRA increased and breaking and tearing strength decreased. Reduction of catalyst at a fixed resin concentration decreased the WRA of the fabrics.
