This study proposes and examines the applicability of a Geo-Healing–based rural therapeutic landscape management framework, using the Hapcheon meteorite impact crater in Korea as a primary case. While existing research on healing agriculture, forest therapy, rural community revitalization, and geopark management has developed independently, few studies have integrated deep-time geological heritage, rural socio-cultural environments, ecological systems, and
memory-based landscape identity into a unified healing-oriented operational model. To address this gap, this study redefines therapeutic environments not as program-driven interventions but as place-based and meaning-forming healing ecosystems, grounded in geological time, rural rhythm, and landscape experience.
The research proceeded in four steps. First, a conceptual foundation for Geo-Healing was established through a comparative review of literature across healing environments, environmental psychology, geotourism, and landscape phenomenology. Second, a three-layer operational framework—composed of a Resource Layer, Experience Layer, and Operation–Stewardship Layer—was developed. Third, this framework was applied to the Hapcheon meteorite crater to assess spatial feasibility, resource potential, programmatic adaptability, governance capacity, and alignment with existing regulatory and policy systems. Finally, implementation feasibility was categorized into three tiers: highly feasible, conditionally feasible, and challenging or limited components.
The findings indicate that the Hapcheon crater possesses strong spatial compatibility with the Geo-Healing model, given its bowl-shaped geomorphology, exposed impact structure, surrounding forest–river–farmland network, and embedded rural settlement pattern. Observation–based geotrails, sensory landscape experiences, and basic interpretive programs were identified as immediately practicable at low operational cost. However, components such as long-term therapeutic residency programs, community-led stewardship models, and certification- or monitoring-based governance systems require institutional readiness, stakeholder collaboration, and capacity building—thus classified as conditional. Meanwhile, long-term integrated governance, international certification alignment, and preservation–use conflict management
were identified as long-term or challenging tasks.
Overall, the Hapcheon meteorite crater is not yet an “immediately applicable complete model” but is more appropriately positioned as a stepwise, adaptive, and experimental rural Geo-Healing testbed. The significance of this study lies in: (1) establishing Geo-Healing as a conceptual framework that bridges geological heritage, rural landscape identity, and therapeutic environmental design; and (2) providing an applied feasibility analysis that demonstrates concrete pathways for transforming a geologically distinctive rural landscape into a healing-based operational system. Future studies should include empirical evaluation of healing outcomes, development of governance frameworks, and refinement of certification and monitoring protocols to advance Geo-Healing into a validated and scalable therapeutic landscape model.
