Toni Morrison has said that she explores three different types of love in her trilogy. In Jazz, which, she claims, deals with a romantic love, she portrays what the romantic love is in reality and should be like ideally. This essay attempts to prove that Morrison`s concept of ideal love approaches to holiness which refers to the dimension where all boundaries are removed and all individuals are interconnected. It also proves that such holiness is implied to be reached by desiring and violating the forbidden. All kinds of trespass are forbidden, but holy love is possible by the act of trespass. This paradoxical phenomenon is theoretically supported by George Bataille. Since the novel tends to exaggerate reality, Jazz takes the act of violation into extreme, such as the case of a fifty-year old man`s forbidden love for a young teenage girl, and the forbidden cracking of middle-age women`s routine selves. Both Joe and Violet dare the forbidden territory and such violation ultimately leads them to holiness. The forbidden territory sometimes attracts people like in Joe`s case, and it can also scare them like in Violet`s. That`s why the deep hole, a symbol of the forbidden, that is, holiness, scares Violet but fascinates Joe. Whether scary or fascinating, the forbidden territory is to be approached by violation, just as the cave by the Treason river. However, Morrison does not seem to believe that such ideal type of love can always be maintained in reality, but she is aware that it is only momentary constantly leaving only its trace--the absence of the presence.
