극(劇)전환을 통한 전래동화의 현대적 재창조 과정 연구 : 뮤지컬〈혹부리 영감과 비보이 도깨비〉의 형상화(形象化) 과정을 중심으로 = Study on the Process of Reinvention with Contemporary Performances of the Traditional Fairy Tale through Dramatization -Process into the Musical form,〈The Old Man with a Lump & B-Boy Goblins〉

Recently, in step with the national musical boom the children`s musical industry also has continuously been in its quantitative and qualitative growth. The children`s musical has its difference from the musical for the adult, which should have its lesson indispensably. Therefore, as this particularity of children`s musical and its restraint it would be not strange to remember the classical fairy tale. The traditional fairy tale has served as a useful vehicle helping us to understand our tradition and culture for a long time. Everyone has experiences having listened to some traditional fairy tales from adults or having read fairy books in childhood. Like that, the traditional fairy tale is very familiar to us, and it will be transmitted to our descendents in the same way that it has been transmitted to us. One main reason why the traditional fairy tale has survived may lie in its educational value. Its educational values can be largely summarized into 5 factors. First, it has entertainment value. Its clear, simple framework and fantastic story has some humor (which are) balanced with story characters based on the prototype and the animism. Second, it has some literature value. The traditional fairy story with clear theme and simple framework is a good model helping children to understand literature`s basic frameworks. The third value lies in its ethical factor. Through the characters` behaviors in such stories, children can be provided some examples for their judgement on what is the right and the wrong, and can have the opportunity for their ethical thinking practice. As the fourth value, it has traditional transmission value. Through the traditional fairy tale, we naturally meet and understand our people`s lives and customs and transmit them to our descendents. Finally, the fifth value may be referred to ask the value satisfying needs. The traditional fairy tale suggests many, indirect experiences about various lives to children who are not exposed to any social experience and relevant matters yet. In these indirect experiences, children can nurture their solution capabilities. Based on the above values, the traditional fairy tale had passed down orally for a long time, and since the creation of letters, it was gradually handed down in the form of documentary literature. Entering the contemporary times, these transmission ways are variously changed and even produced in the forms of media program and performance, increasing its ripple effect. Producing the children`s educational musical presided by Gwangju MBC(Munwha Broadcasting Corporation), I groped for the way more efficient to show the common denominator of classic fairy tale and children`s musical. Accordingly, growing out of embodying the classic fairy tale as it is, and in connection with modern culture it has delivered children efficiently the lesson of work, and embodied the work that can provide children with various experiences of culture. So I progressed the plan to recreate the〈The Old Man with a Lump〉, a fairy tale, into a musical with traditional & modern senses. As a first step, I reinterpreted〈The Old Man with a Lump〉`s lessons according to modern values and searched for ways to utilize the fairy tale as a musical entertainment. After entering the full-scale ; musical production, I focused on following 3 fields and analyzed them. First, we had to make a new story plot, new characters, and new relationship through adaptation work. We also had to ascertain modern entertainment factors in the traditional characters and background. Second, we had to create music to represent the dramatic adaptation more effectively in embracing traditional & modern features. Third, we had to devise dancing to effectively express the drama and the music. This research is expected to analyze the production process of children`s musical〈The Old Man with a Lump and B. boy Goblins〉 that has been produced over this sort of production process, to grope for the efficient way to deliver the classical fairy tale`s own value, to interpret the infinite classical fairy tales later in various angles, to use various arts and entertainment technique for its dramatization in its base in order to present the model for this production process and to activate this work more.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

근래 국내의 뮤지컬 붐에 발맞추어 어린이 뮤지컬 산업 역시 지속적으로 그 양적 및 질적인 성장을 해오고 있다. 어린이 뮤지컬은 일반 성인을 대상으로 하는 뮤지컬과 차별성을 갖는데, 그것은 교훈성이 필수적으로 드러나야 한다는 것이다. 따라서 어린이 뮤지컬의 이런 특수성과 부합하는 제재로써 전래동화를 떠올린 것은 낯선 일이 아닐 것이다. 전래동화는 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 우리민족의 전통과 문화를 이해하도록 도와주는 훌륭한 전달자 역할을 해왔다. 누구나 어릴 때 어른들로부터 전래동화를 전해 듣거나 동화책을 통해 읽은 경험이 있다. 그만큼 우리에게 친숙한 전래동화는 우리가 전달 받은 방식과 같은 방법으로 또 다시 우리의 후손에게 전달되어 계속 이어질 것이다. 이처럼 전래동화가 계속 전승되는 것은 그것이 가진 교육적 가치에 힘입음이 크다. 전래동화가 지닌 고유의 교육적 가치를 다음의 다섯 가지로 요약해 보건데 그 첫째는 오락적 가치로 전래동화의 명쾌하고 단순한 구성의 환상적인 스토리는 전형성과 물활론(物活論)적 사고를 기반으로 하는 캐릭터들과 어우러져 누구나 즐길 수 있는 오락적 묘미를 가지고 있다. 둘째로는 문학적 가치를 들 수 있다. 주제와 구성이 명확하고 단순한 전래동화는 어린이들에게 문학의 기본 구성을 이해시키는 좋은 표본이 된다. 세 번째, 윤리적 가치를 지녔다. 등장인물의 행위를 통해 어린이들은 옳고 그름을 판단할 예시를 제공받으며 이를 통해 윤리적 사고를 하는 기회를 얻게 되는 것이다. 넷째로 전통계승의 가치가 있다. 우리는 전래동화를 통해 우리 민족의 삶과 풍속을 자연스럽게 접하고 이해하며 이를 전승하게 되는 것이다. 마지막 다섯 번째로 욕구충족의 가치를 언급하겠다. 전래동화는 아직 사회적 경험에 노출되지 않은 어린이들에게 다양한 삶의 간접경험을 제시하고 이를 통해서 문제 해결 능력을 고양시키는 기능을 한다. 전래동화는 이런 가치들을 기반으로 오랜 세월을 구비전승(口碑傳承) 되어 오다가 문자가 생긴 이래로 차츰 기록문학의 형태로 전해져 왔다. 이러한 전승방법은 현대에 들어 보다 다양하게 변모하여 미디어와 공연 형태로 제작되어 그 파급력을 높여왔다. 필자는 이번에 광주MBC의 주최로 어린이 교육 뮤지컬을 제작하면서 전래동화와 어린이 뮤지컬이 갖는 공통분모를 보다 효과적으로 드러낼 방법을 모색하게 되었다. 그리하여 전래동화를 있는 그대로 구현하는 데서 탈피하여 현대의 문화를 접목시켜 어린이들에게 작품이 지니는 교훈을 효율적으로 전달하고 어린이들에게 있어 다양한 문화체험을 제공할 수 있는 작품을 구상하게 된 것이다. 그리하여 전래동화 중〈혹부리 영감〉 이야기를 전통과 현대적 감각이 공존하는 뮤지컬로 재창조하는 방안을 추진하게 되었다. 그 첫 번째 과정으로〈혹부리 영감〉 이야기가 담고 있는 교훈을 현대의 가치관에 맞게 재해석함과 더불어 도깨비를 뮤지컬 엔터테인먼트로 활용할 방법을 찾는 작업이 선행되었다. 그리고 본격적이 제작과정에 있어서 세 가지 부문에 주목하여 분석하였는데 이는 다음과 같다. 첫 번째, 대본각색을 통해 새로운 플롯과 새로운 인물관계를 만들고 전통적 인물과 배경에서 현대적 엔터테인먼트를 나타낼 수 있는 요소를 찾는 것이다. 둘째는 전통과 현대를 모두 포용하여 각색본의 드라마를 효과적으로 표현해 주는 음악을 창작하는 것이다. 셋째로 드라마와 음악을 표현하는데 효과적인 안무의 개발이다. 본 연구는 이런 일련의 작업과정을 거쳐 제작된 어린이 뮤지컬〈혹부리 영감과 비보이 도깨비〉의 제작과정을 분석하여 전래동화가 가진 고유의 가치관을 보다 효과적으로 전달하는 방법을 모색하고 나아가 앞으로 무수히 많은 전래동화들을 다각도로 해석하고 다양한 예술, 엔터테인먼트 기법을 활용하여 극(劇)화 시키는 작업이 더욱 활성화 되도록 그 기반을 만들어 차후에 이러한 제작과정에 있어서의 모델을 제시하고자 하며 이러한 작업이 앞으로 더 활성화되길 기대해 본다.
