Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) is a representative composer of the pre-classical era who produced over twenty flute sonatas. Among these, the Hamburger Sonata(1786) is a piece that Bach composed two years before his death and is his final flute sonata. As a transitional piece that segues from the pre-classical to classical era, the Hamburger Sonata is composed of musical characteristics that include a classical “sonata form” structure and a pre-classical “galant-style” melody. Accordingly, the present study analyzes this piece with a focus on its structure and musical form.
First, this piece is structurally composed of only two fast movements, as opposed to the three-four movement “fast-slow-fast” form that was standardized by Franz Joseph Haydn(1732-1809). The first movement is composed in a classical sonata movenent form , and the second movement is composed in rondo form. Also, the prelude in this piece is primarily structured around the circle of fifths, and the harmonic relationship of the first and second subjects in the exposition of the first movement is foreshadowed with a dominant key. These characteristics demonstrate Bach’s close adherence to Haydn’s traditional classical sonata form.
Second, in the melodic aspects of this piece, decorative elements such as galant-style ornamentation, syncopation, dotted rhythms stand out. In the flute part, the music progresses with a colorful melody, whereas the piano part consists of a comparatively simple melody that fills in the harmony, demonstrating the pre-classical gallant-style musical ideal of a “simple yet elegant” melody.
