Flower & Hayes의 과정중심이론에 관한 비판적 재검토 = Critical Reevaluation of Flower & Hayes’s Process Theory of Writing

This study analyzes and evaluates the meaning of Linda Flower and John Hayes’s research paper, “A Cognitive Process Theory of Writing”.
Flower and Hayes’s paper is the most famous in the field of process-based writing theory and education. In order to examine it with scrutiny, we need to review Patricia Bizzell’s “Cognition, Convention, and Certainty: What We Need to Know About Writing” as Bizzell offers an acute criticism on Flower and Hayes’s paper. Bizzell presents two key concerns to criticize Flower and Hayes’s processed-based writing theory: Certainty and Inherence. Certainty refers to the perspective that the complex writing process can be generalized. On the other side, inherence refers to the view that decisions made in the process of writing are understood only through humans’ cognitive thinking process. Bizzell considers both of these issues as problems inherent in the processed-based theory, but his opinion is only half right. Even though Flower and Hayes tried to find a general rule through thinking process, they did not regard it as an absolute canon. More importantly, process-based theorists overlooked the fact that ideas are often formed through language expressions. Finally, this paper describes the creative power of language expression through Galbraith’s paper.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 과정중심이론과 과정중심 교육방법을 가능하게 했던 1981년Linda Flower와 John Hayes의 논문 “글쓰기의 인지과정이론(A Cognitive Process Theory of Writing)”을 분석하고 그 의미를 진단하고자 한 논문이다.
이 논문에서는 Flower & Hayes의 논문을 비판한 1982년 Patricia Bizzell의논문 “인지, 관습, 그리고 확실성: 우리가 글쓰기에 대해 알아야 하는 것(Cognition, Convention, and Certainty: What We Need to Know About Writing)”을 가지고 그 내용을 검토하면서 과정중심이론의 공과를 검토해 보도록 한다. Bizzell은 과정중심이론을 비판하면서 두 가지 핵심 화제를 든다.
하나는 확실성(certainty)의 문제이며, 다른 하나는 내재성(inherence)의 문제이다. 확실성은 복잡한 작문 과정을 보편화, 일반화할 수 있다고 보는 관점이며, 내재성은 작문 과정의 의사결정을 오직 인간의 내부 심리로만 파악하고자 하는 관점이다. Bizzell은 이 두 가지 문제를 가지고 과정중심이론을 비판하지만 모두가 옳은 판단은 아니었다. Flower와 Hayes는 사고 과정(thinking process)을 통해 일반화된 법칙을 찾고자 했지만 이를 절대적인 규칙으로 보지는 않았다. 이 논문에서 지적하는 보다 더 중요한 문제는 과정중심이론이언어 표현을 통해 아이디어가 생성된다는 사실을 알지 못했다는 점이다. 마지막으로, 이 논문에서는 Galbraith를 통해 언어 표현이 갖는 생성적인 힘을 설명한다.
