This article analyzes the reports and photographs which appeared in popular British magazines and newspapers during the 1950s in order to understand the changing trends and views of nuclear weapons within British society. The idea is illustrated mainly through detailed analysis of Picture Post, Britain`s leading illustrated magazine from August 1945 until its last issue in June 1957, along with newspapers such as the Daily Express, Daily Mirror, News Statesman, etc. These popular presses played a significant role in setting the agenda for public and private discussion, and in providing interpretative frameworks through which readers made sense of the world. From the mid-1950s the rise of the television did start to alter the place of newspapers in the media landscape, but the popular press`s offering remained distinctive and influential in shaping the image of nuclear weapons in the post-war period.
